Judo

Judo, or the “gentle way”, is a martial art created by Jigoro Kano in 1882. It’s named the “gentle way” because the essence of Judo is to use your opponent’s energy against them, without having to exert unnecessary amounts of force.

At The Dojo, unlike many other academies that offer Jiu Jitsu programs, our Judo program is a stand alone and independent program that focuses on modern competitive Judo as a sport and martial art, not as a supplement to other grappling arts but with its own community and identity. We encourage you to come and try a class and see for yourself what the Judo community is all about!

BENEFITS
OF JUDO

  • Judo develops legs, core, grip, and upper body strength while improving balance, timing, and body awareness through throws and groundwork.

  • It teaches how to control an opponent, use leverage, and safely take someone to the ground—very effective without relying on strikes

  • Judo emphasizes respect, patience, and problem-solving under pressure, which builds confidence and emotional control over time.

  • Since Judo focuses on throws and grappling, it’s often easier to train long-term compared to striking arts, especially when practiced with proper breakfalls.
